Alaska Milk underscores importance of milk in combatting malnutrition

01 June 2023, Makati City: As the leading dairy brand in the Philippines, Alaska Milk Corporation (AMC) celebrates World Milk Day at its head office in Makati City and manufacturing plant in San Pedro City, Laguna, by underscoring the importance of milk to combat malnutrition in the Philippines.

“World Milk Day is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness about the importance of milk in a healthy diet and its contribution to the economy. We are proud to be a part of this celebration, and we are committed to promoting sustainability while fighting against malnutrition and low milk consumption in the Philippines,” said Tarang Gupta, Managing Director of AMC

“AMC believes that promoting sustainability is not just a responsibility but also a business opportunity. The company can reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance its reputation by embracing environmentally friendly practices,” added Tarang Gupta.

Not only do 91.3% of schoolchildren aged 6 to 9 have an inadequacy in calcium from milk, but also 97.2% of adults in the Philippines ages 19-59. “This inadequacy in vitamins and nutrients can be aided by consuming milk that may provide opportunities for nutrition and health intervention,” emphasized Divorah Aguila, Head of Planning of the Department of Science and Technology Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).

“Recognizing the need for more investment in the dairy industry, the Department of Agriculture, through the National Dairy Authority (NDA) and the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), is implementing a four-year dairy improvement program to boost the country’s livestock herd. The NDA implements its herd build-up program to ensure and accelerate the increase in local dairy stocks and milk production,” said the Agricultural Counselor of the United States Department of Agriculture-Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS), Morgan Haas.
